Simultaneous Concept Analysis of Diagnoses Related to Urinary Incontinence

Abstract: PURPOSE:To elucidate six diagnostic concepts related to urinary incontinence (UI). METHODS: Eight out of nine steps of the simultaneous concept analysis (SCA) method were used to elucidate six diagnostic concepts related to UI proposed by NANDA International. FINDINGS: Individual concepts of each diagnosis were elucidated, including antecedents, outcomes, associated conditions, and risk populations, and the interrelations among these concepts were identified, comparing them to those already present in the curr… Show more

“…Content analysis of four UI-related diagnoses based on NANDA-I version 2018-2020 were performed: Stress UI, Urgency UI, Functional UI and UI due to Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity (denominated Reflex UI in NANDA-I's taxonomy), and UI due to Neurogenic Detrusor Overactivity (denominated Reflex UI in NANDA-I's taxonomy). Mixed and Transient UI were included in the analysis; those were identified by an integrative review conducted in a previous study (4) .…”

“…The first part encompassed identification data and professional experience, whereas the second covered data regarding an analysis of the six studied nursing diagnoses, including all its elements (title, definition, defining characteristics, related factors, associated conditions, and at risk population). The elements of nursing diagnoses Mixed UI and Transient UI were identified by a literature review conducted in a previous study (4) and classified for each group (defining characteristics, related factors, associated conditions and at risk population) by the researchers, based on the literature and their clinical and research experience in this area. Each judge was requested to define whether the proposed element was representative of the diagnosis at issue and what was its relevance to the diagnosis on a one to five scale; score one represented an irrelevant category, whereas five indicated it was very relevant for that diagnosis.…”

“…In prostatectomized patients, two main types are distinguished: effort (70%) and urgency (30%) UI (7) . Stress UI is the involuntary UI after performing activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure; urgency UI is the involuntary UI that occurs immediately after a strong urge to urinate (6,8) .…”

“…19 The researchers use concept analysis as a methodology to clarify concepts, diagnoses, and their theoretical definitions. 20,21 However, previous revisions have failed to distinguish the two constructions, requiring further investigation. Even more, considering that concepts and knowledge are dynamic, the constant conceptual update of the nursing diagnoses is recommended.…”
