While the reported stroke rate for staged CEA followed by CABG ranged from 2.4% to 3.2% [5,6,14,20], we discovered a stroke rate of 1.1% for short staged CEA before CABG. Of patients who undergo CABG, 1.6% to 3.0% are expected to have a stroke [25,28], which is a serious cause of post-CABG morbidity and mortality.…”

“…For carotid surgery there is the option of CEA or carotid stenting, while for coronary bypass surgeons may perform conventional CABG or off-pump CABG. The literature has demonstrated that carotid artery stenting has an overall higher mortality and higher stroke rate [20,21]; therefore, at our institution carotid artery stenting is reserved for symptomatic patients with specific contraindications to CEA. In general, the symptomatic lesion takes precedence in determining the sequence of procedures when staged.…”
