Simultaneous cancellation of narrow band interference and impulsive noise in PLC systems

Abstract: The two major sources of disturbances for an efficient and reliable data transmission through power lines, known as power line communication (PLC), are impulsive noise (IN) and narrow band interference (NBI). In this paper, we propose an algorithm to cancel the IN and NBI simultaneously for an OFDM based PLC system. The proposed method exploits the duality of the problem, where the IN is sparse in the time domain and the NBI is sparse in the frequency domain. By virtue of this duality, we use multiple signal c… Show more

“…If the symbol '1' is inserted in the second sub-carrier, [0 1 0 0], then the 2 nd column will be used in the transform, and so on. On the other hand, for MBPSK the rows without the symbol '1' are considered by the transform since the amplitude of each element in the row affects the summing up of the sinusoids in (8). The time domain symbols, s m l and s q l demonstrate that MBPSK has a way of preserving the signal amplitude.…”

“…For instance, Sanjana and Suma based on the threshold-based techniques (clipping and nulling) for IN in the time domain and frequency suppression for NBI in frequency domain [7]. In [8] an iterative approach is proposed based on the use of multiple-signal characterizing (MUSIC) method, least square (LS) estimator and minimum mean square error (MMSE) estimator whilst [9] proposes a method aligned to coded modulation where he used a conventional modulation scheme and permutation codes. Part of the work contributed in [10] shows the better performance of MBPSK scheme under the influence of different system parameters when compared to the QFSK scheme.…”

“…communication equipment, like Bluetooth, will affect WLAN (802.11g/n) in the passband [4], [5]. RF interference from amateur radio can affect digital subscriber line (DSL) and power line communication (PLC) systems [6]- [8]. In recent years, internet of things (IoT) [9]- [11], one of the 5G technologies, has been extensively used due to its low cost, low complexity, and low latency requirements.…”

“…It needs the threshold of IN occurrence probability in the process of determining IN support, and prior knowledge of IN power in the process of noise amplitude estimation [27]. Multiple signal classification (MUSIC) method was applied to estimate the candidate supports of IN coarsely and then expand support into neighborhood locations, taking into account the effect brought by impulsive noise to background noise ratio (INR) and sample windows for estimation [28]- [29]. Besides, IN amplitudes were estimated identically using MMSE with prior knowledge of IN power as described in [27].…”
