Simultaneous bilateral anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: a safe option

Abstract: When patients present with bilateral anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficiency and require reconstruction in both knees, a single setting or staged approach can be adopted. Although single-setting reconstruction has been described, there are no published case series that describe simultaneous bilateral ACL reconstruction. We report a case series of eight patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral ACL reconstruction. We used two-camera stack systems to allow for truly simultaneous bilateral surgery by two … Show more

“…9,[11][12][13] In nonspinal surgeries, a dual surgeon approach was found to improve the outcome of surgery. 14,15 In spinal surgery involving pedicle subtraction osteotomies, the dual attending surgeon strategy led to reduced operative time and blood loss. This could reduce the prevalence of operative morbidity.…”

“…La reconstruction bilatérale du LCA en deux étapes prend beaucoup plus de temps pour le patient et coûte cher pour la santé. Saithna et al [4] rapporte une série de cas de huit patients ayant subi une reconstruction bilatérale simultanée du LCA, en utilisant des systèmes de pile à deux caméras pour permettre la chirurgie bilatérale réellement simultanée par deux équipes chirurgicales. A deux semaines, tous les patients étaient indépendants dans leur mobilité.…”

“…We found that we had similar outcomes in patients undergoing bilateral simultaneous ACL reconstruction when compared with published outcomes for unilateral ACL reconstruction with respect to Lysholm, Tegner, and IKDC scores. Although previous studies 12 have reported outcomes of simultaneous bilateral ACL reconstruction with hamstring tendons, but they have also used patellar tendon graft and, moreover, carried out the procedure with two surgical teams performing simultaneously, which may contribute to differences in the operative and rehabilitative outcomes. The surgeon operating better or having better skills may have better outcomes.…”
