Simultaneous Alveolar Cleft Closure and Dental Midline Correction with Curvilinear Intraoral Distraction

Abstract: This article describes a new method that enables vector control during alveolar distraction osteogenesis in the treatment of a cleft palate patient. The patient presented with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and the alveolar part of the defect was covered by a mobile buccal flap. The distraction was performed by sliding the surgically released tooth segment with the help of an intraoral distractor over 1.5-mm stainless steel archwires held by metal crowns. This vector-controlled method enabled new bo… Show more

“…In these studies, the denture is relatively aligned so that the tooth-borne distractor can be used. However, tooth-borne distraction has the potential of tooth tipping, even loosening (Erverdi et al, 2014). To minimize the pressure on the involved teeth, bone-borne distractor was designed.…”

“…Two types of distractors have been reported for dental alveolar DO. Tooth-borne DO is widely used in patients with bigger space (Erverdi et al, 2014). However, there are some complications such as tooth tipping and loosening.…”
