Simulations of slow positron production using a low-energy electron accelerator

Abstract: Monte Carlo simulations of slow positron production via energetic electron interaction with a solid target have been performed. The aim of the simulations was to determine the expected slow positron beam intensity from a low energy, high current electron accelerator. By simulating (a) the fast positron production from a tantalum electron-positron converter and (b) the positron depth deposition profile in a tungsten moderator, the slow positron production probability per incident electron was estimated. Normali… Show more

“…Several facilities of this type are currently in operation around the world with electron energies from about 15 MeV to 1.3 GeV (Jungmann et al, 2013;Krause-Rehberg et al, 2008;O'Rourke et al, 2011;Wada et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2008). It is also possible to obtain useful positron output using more modest electron accelerators.…”

“…The moderator efficiency (ratio of the 'slow' positrons fraction to the total number of them) substantially reduces with increase of the energy of initial positrons and reaches ∼ 10 −5 at the energy of a few MeV, [14]. One of effective methods to reduce the energy of the income to the moderator positrons was proposed in ANL, [15].…”

“…The simulations have been aimed at clarification the production and transport of the low-energy positrons. In addition, we considered moderation (slowing down) of such positrons, implying that the yield of positrons from a moderator is inversely proportional to their energy [21].…”
