Simulations of multipactor in circular waveguides

Abstract: Detailed numerical simulations have been done to investigate the properties of multipactor breakdown in circular waveguides operating in the propagating fundamental TE11 mode. Main attention has been given to a comparison between the two fundamental cases corresponding to linear and circular polarizations, respectively, of the propagating electromagnetic wave. It is found that circular polarization is considerably more susceptible to multipactor than linear polarization. The reason for this difference is clari… Show more

“…Multipactor has been well studied in rectangular waveguides [4], circular waveguides [5], coaxial lines [6], and accelerating cavities [7]. In accelerating cavities it has been established that an elliptical cavity geometry causes any electrons to travel towards the location of maximum magnetic field and minimum electric field at the top of the cavity equator.…”

“…Power handling is a severe problem in many different applications, particularly in modern microwave circuits subject to strong microwave signals. Because of strong electromagnetic fields existing within the device, an irreversible failure may occur, due to corona or multipaction in vacuum or at low pressure, or due to microwave breakdown at atmospheric pressure.…”

“…978-1-4673-5977-1/13/$31.00 ©2013 IEEE A Particle-In-Cell code, similar to the one developed in [4] was developed to demonstrate the influence of the permanent magnetic field with 2 different values of gap width. The simulations were performed using Vaughan's approximation [5] and the value of the first cross-over point at around 30 eV like the sample 2 of the previous paragraph.…”
