Simulations of Aerodynamic Behaviour of a Super Utility Vehicle Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

Abstract: The main objective of this study is to investigate ways to reduce the aerodynamic drag coefficient and to increase the stability of full-size road vehicles using three dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. The baseline model of the vehicle used in the simulation is the Land Rover Discovery. There are many modern aerodynamic add-on devices which are investigated in this research. All of these devices are used individually or in combination. These add-on devices should not affect the vehicl… Show more

“…The majority of cars in developing countries are petroleum-powered, and fuel consumption is rising at an alarming rate of 5% per year. As a result, experts are attempting to lower the fuel consumption of road vehicles; even a slight reduction will be a significant accomplishment [1][2][3] . Traditional methods of lowering a vehicle's fuel consumption include reducing its total weight, adjusting the engine volume, the engine combustion process, and so on, all of which directly impact its comfort and performance.…”

“…In order to establish a control volume throughout the truck, the domain was made large than the model's; the objective of this size was to avoid the effect of the boundary layer on the domain wall [30]. According to Abdellah et al, [31], the domain dimensions could be created as follows: 3L for the front length, 5L for the back domain length, and 3L for the top domain length, whereby L is the length of the truck. The inner box was created in the area surrounding the truck to control the mesh in the area side of the truck and observed the wake area behind truck [32].…”

“…Y+ value was set as 11.63. Density box was created to refine the meshes around the car, especially the meshes behind the car, where air streaming is usually sophisticated [12]. Meshes in external flow field is shown in Figure 5.…”
