Simulation tools in enhancing metal casting productivity and quality: A review

Abstract: Casting simulation softwares are increasingly being used in modern foundries and metal casting industries. Softwares simulate the casting process in a virtual domain and provide insight into mold filling, solidification and cooling, and casting defects. Casting simulations allow designers to model, verify, and validate the process followed by optimization of design and process parameters before they actually put into practice. This article aims at exploring the methods of modeling and simulation of metal casti… Show more

“…NovaFlow & Solid was the hardest to learn, and it required more learning time to be proficient. Khan and Sheikh (2016) did a recent review on the use of simulation tools to improve the casting productivity and the quality of the casted parts. They report that current simulation software enables the user to predict better the life of the cast product.…”

“…It was observed that, by modifying the existing standard permanent molds, higher tensile properties could be obtained from conventional Al foundry alloys. Numerical simulation studies have been quite effective in understanding the distribution of porosity during melt flow and optimizing die parameters [ 7 ]. Regarding mechanical test conditions, capacity of machine, sensor system, cross-head speed, data elaboration, time between manufacturing and test, and testing temperature affect the behavior of castings.…”
