Simulation Study on the Integration of Health Traits in Horse Breeding Programs

Abstract: Osteochondrosis dissecans (OCD) is a degenerative disease of the cartilage leading to osseous fragments in the joints. It is important in horse breeding both from an animal welfare and an economic perspective. To study adequate breeding strategies to reduce OCD prevalence, a lifelike simulation of the breeding program of German Warmblood horses was performed with the R package MoBPS. We simulated complex breeding schemes of riding horses with different selection steps and realistic age structure, mimic… Show more

“…In the following, we will discuss an exemplary use case of the web-interface for a dairy cattle breeding program on farm level. A variety of other breeding schemes that can be simulated via MoBPSweb including a commercial layer breeding program [Supplemental File S2, ( Simianer et al 2020 )], the inclusion of health traits in horse breeding [Supplemental File S3, ( Büttgen et al 2020 )], a cock rotation to preserve genetic diversity in chicken (Supplemental File S4) and the generation of a MAGIC population in maize (Supplemental File S5) are given as templates at www.mobps.de .…”

“…The performance of an elite horse is the sum of its genetic capacity (transmitted by its ancestors) and environmental influences (management, nutrition, training, horseman and other random effects). The EBVs are estimates of the animal’s genetic capacity and can be used for the calculation of sports performance [ 6 ], morphology [ 32 ], health [ 33 ] and for the selection and culling of breeding animals.…”

“…As this is usually of interest in a simulation study, we generally recommend keeping a simulation study on an appropriate level of simplification. However, if a more complex design is needed after all, modern simulation software such as MoBPS provides a variety of features for modelling, such breeding programs (Büttgen et al 2020) in a flexible but still highly efficient way.…”
