Simulation of water turbine integrated with electrical generator

Abstract: The paper presents the analysis of the small hydropower plant working at variable speed. The hydro-set that consists of the guide vanes and propeller turbine integrated with the permanent magnet synchronous generator is simulated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in Ansys Fluent v18.0. The k-ε and k-ω SST models, as well as the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras (SA) model, were tested. The comparison showed the significant divergence of the calculation results. The turbulence model selection influences t… Show more

“…For turbulence modeling, considering a fully turbulent flow condition imposed by the high Reynolds number, equal to about 2.7 million based on axial velocity and the rotor blade chord, the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model [20] is employed, renowned for its ability to offer a straightforward yet reliable assessment of turbulence effects in hydraulic applications [21][22][23]. The height of the first cell near solid walls in each row is adjusted to achieve a non-dimensional wall coordinate (y + ) of approximately 1.…”

“…Given the large number of simulations to be performed during the database generation, the simple but reliable turbulence model [25,26] proposed by Spalart-Allmaras [27] was chosen for the evaluation of the turbulence effects. The mesh first cell height is suitably chosen in order to ensure a value of y + below the unit.…”
