-High voltage insulators are widely deployed in power systems to isolate the live-and dead-part of overhead lines as well as to support the power line conductors mechanically. Permanent, secure and safe operation of power transmission lines require that the high voltage insulators are inspected and monitor, regularly. Severe environment conditions will influence insulator surface and change creepage distance. Consequently, power utilities and transmission companies face significant problem in operation due to insulator damage or contamination. In this study, a new technique is developed for real-time inspection of insulator and estimating the snow, ice and water over the insulator surface which can be a potential risk of operation breakdown. To examine the proposed system, practical experiment is conducted using ceramic insulator for capturing the images with snow, ice and wet surface conditions. Gabor and Standard deviation filters are utilized for image feature extraction. The best achieved recognition accuracy rate was 87% using statistical approach the Standard deviation.

This research paper aims to investigate the optimal design of grading rings for high-voltage polymeric insulators in an actual power transmission system, with a focus on improving the electrical representation of the insulator strings. One such subsidiary accessory commonly used with porcelain and polymer insulator strings is the grading ring, which is employed to improve the electric field and voltage distribution surrounding the insulator string. The efficiency of insulator strings can be enhanced by grading rings, as they facilitate a more linear potential division along the strings. The design parameters of grading rings significantly influence their performance on insulator strings. In this study, we examine the optimal design of the grading rings of high-voltage polymer insulators, since no uniform design methodology has been developed for high-voltage polymer insulators, and their optimization is currently the subject of many research studies. The electric field on an outdoor polymeric insulator is examined using finite element method (FEM) software and COMSOL Multi-Physics program. A 2D model is utilized to simulate a 220 kV polymeric insulator. The effectiveness of high-voltage polymeric insulators greatly depends on the dimensions and locations of the grading rings. Therefore, the impacts of the radius of the grading ring and that of its tube and the tube’s vertical position are thoroughly investigated, under dry and humid conditions. To achieve this objective, a search algorithm is employed to adjust the dimensions and locations of the grading ring. The optimization approach in this study is based on determining the maximum electric field across the insulator surface, while ensuring that it remains below the corona initiation level.

Cap and Pin insulators are key elements on aerial electric power transmission lines in which their performance is subject to the environmental elements, like pollution and/or humidity. Furthermore, a broken insulator (stub) on an insulator string may change the voltage distribution along the chain. This paper goal is to study the effects of the voltage distribution along with tempered glass cap and pin insulator string in the presence of broken skirts as well contamination by pollution, using for that purpose a finite element software. This paper presents the voltage distribution profile across single and fourteen units of glass insulator string with stubs at distinct locations as well for the presence of contamination by pollution. It is concluded that the presence of pollution on a string with stubs will alter and exacerbate the increase of electrical potential effect due to the presence of stubs.
