Simulation of temperature and precipitation climatology for the Central Asia CORDEX domain using RegCM 4.0

Abstract: The Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) is a framework designed to coordinate international efforts on regional climate simulations. CORDEX domains encompass the majority of land areas of the world. Region 8 of the CORDEX basically covers Central Asia, with the corners of the domain at 54. 76°N, 11.05°E; 56.48°N, 139.13°E; 18.34°N, 42.41°E; and 19.39°N, 108.44°E and with a horizontal resolution of 50 km. In the present study, the results of an experiment with the ICTP regional climate… Show more

“…The model has been applied to 2 new regions by Alma zroui (2012; the Middle East) and Ozturk et al (2012;central Asia). In Almazroui et al (2012), model experiments are driven by both reanalysis of observations and a GCM, and RegCM4 nesting improves the results from this driving GCM.…”

“…For this study, we use a similar model set-up for dynamic downscaling over different regions of the globe that are defined within CORDEX. These CORDEX domains are widely used for regional studies across the globe (e.g., [24][25][26][27][28]). The driving simulations of MPI-ESM are performed within the framework of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 (CMIP5) [29], using the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), which prescribe future atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations and aerosols [30].…”

“…Several studies utilizing RCMs demonstrate the merits of dynamical downscaling in Asia for hindcasts and future projections (Chotamonsak et al 2011;Kim et al 2008;Ozturk et al 2012;Qian et al 2003;Sato and Xue 2013;Schiemann et al 2008). However, it has to be kept in mind that inter-model variations can be substantial (Fu et al 2005;Leung et al 1999).…”
