Simulation of overvoltage stresses on surge arrester insulation

Abstract: SUMMARYImpulse voltage testing is generally carried out for assessing the insulation strength of power equipment using standard impulse voltage waveforms in high-voltage laboratory. However, in actual field, the power equipment experiences standard and non-standard lightning impulse voltages. The main objective of this work is to analyse the voltage stress on surge arresters under standard and non-standard lightning impulse waveforms. Surge arrester models are developed in MATLAB (The MathWorks, Inc., Natick, … Show more

“…One major consequence of pollutants in such areas is the reduction of insulation or losing the insulation in transmission lines and stations. In such areas, an identification of an effective insulation in pollution scenarios is not only important for designing and selecting the appropriate type of insulation but also for adopting a proper maintenance plan of insulation devices . According to the literature, field visits, laboratory tests on insulators, computer simulation, and experience, there is a need for reconsidering insulation coordination in Mazandaran and Golestan power network.…”

“…Protection of power system and its large and small devices against these events is one of the most important tasks that should be performed well to ensure the stability and the permanent activity of power system. This issue is particularly important in power transmission and distribution systems . Therefore, various solutions had been used in the electrical industry to prevent these events as shown in Figure .…”
