Simulation of Bullet Fragmentation and Penetration in Granular Media

Abstract: The aim of this work is to simulate the fragmentation of bullets impacted through granular media, in this case, sand. In order to validate the simulation, a group of experiments were conducted with the sand contained in two different box prototypes. The walls of the first box were constructed with fiberglass and the second with plywood. The prototypes were subjected to the impact force of bullets fired 15 m away from the box. After the shots, X-ray photographs were taken to observe the penetration depth. Trans… Show more

“…The bullets stopped at 127 and 200 mm, depending on the riffle type and board surface material. The minimum commercial thickness walls are required to support 10 kg of sand per block [8]. Have to consider that the penetration depth is considerably larger in wet sand than in dry sand, independent of bullet type [9].…”

“…Several containers of glass fiber with different geometries have been used as an alternative to ballistic walls. The advantage of using fiber 2nd Materials Engineering and Modern Manufacturing (MeMM) materials is that they are cheap, environmentally friendly, and easy to repair compared to other ballistic blocks based on ceramics and plastics, which cannot be repaired after damage [8]. Wood (cross-laminated timber (CLT), plywood).…”
