In tropical areas, mass movements are common phenomena, especially during periods of heavy rainfall, which frequently take place in the summer season. These phenomena have caused loss of life and serious damage to infrastructure and properties. The most prominent of these phenomena are landslides that can produce debris flows. Thus, this article aims at determining affected areas using a model to predict landslide prone areas (SHALSTAB) combined with an empirical model designed to define the debris flow travel distance and area of deposition. The methodology of this work consists of the following steps: (a) elaboration of a digital elevation model (DEM), (b) application of the deterministic SHALSTAB model to locate the landslide prone areas, (c) identification of the debris flow travel distance and area of deposition, and (d) mapping of the affected areas (landslides and debris flows). This work was developed in an area in which many mass movements occurred after intense rainfall during the summer season (February 1996) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast Brazil. All of the scars produced by that event were mapped, allowing for validation of the applied models. The model results show that the mapped landslide locations can adequately be simulated by the model.

The article reflects the results of a systematic analysis of scientific and technical literature for the purpose of studying the existing classifications of landslides and landslide processes, the reasons for the activation of landslides, as well as normative and traditional methods of calculating the stability of slopes. The constant need to attract new sites for construction leads to the active use of areas with difficult engineering and geological conditions, including landslide and landslide-prone areas. The use of such areas entails certain risks and is a complex engineering task. Solving this problem is impossible without a detailed analysis of the existing state of the slope and a forecast of its behavior under the influence of potential natural and man-made influences. Various classifications of landslides, landslide processes and landslide systems are considered in the article . It is noted that there is still no generally accepted classification of landslides, which is due to the difference in terminological and conceptual bases in different countries. The complexity and heterogeneity of the morphology and genesis of slopes, as well as a large number of natural and man-made factors that can affect it, actually make it impossible to develop a unified classification convenient for use in various cases. An analysis of scientific and technical literature was carried out in order to identify natural and technogenicfactors that have an impact on the development of shear deformations. The work considers normative and traditional methods of calculating slopes. According to normative documents, general requirements and recommendations for the calculation of landslide and landslide-prone slopes are given. The division of analytical methods into certain groups, performed by different authors, and a brief overview of the most common methods are considered. These methods have certain advantages and disadvantages, which determine the rationality of their application in various conditions.

O objetivo deste trabalho é de discutir os resultados obtidos pela análise temporal da ocorrência de movimentos de massa em Caraguatatuba e São Sebastião (SP), entre 1967 e 2011, através da fotointerpretação de cicatrizes de escorregamento e levantamento bibliográfico. Para tal, foram utilizadas cartas topográficas em escala 1:50.000 do IBGE das folhas Caraguatatuba, Pico do Papagaio, Maresias e São Sebastião, mapa geológico em escala 1:50.000 das folhas Caraguatatuba e Pico do Papagaio e São Sebastião, ortofotos em escala 1:10.000 da Emplasa (2011) e mapa de cicatrizes de escorregamento (FÚLFARO et al., 1976). Em ambos os cenários os locais mais atingidos por movimentos de massa foram aqueles situados na região serrana, devido às suas características fisiográficas (altos valores de declividade, relevo escarpado a serrano e existência de canais de primeira ordem). Estes resultados serão utilizados para subsidiar estudos de retro-análise e como inputs para modelagens numéricas com softwares de simulação 3D.
