Public organizations need innovative approaches for managing common goods and to explain the dynamics linking the (re)generation of common goods and organizational performance. Although system dynamics is recognised as a useful approach for managing common goods, public organizations rarely adopt the system dynamics for this goal. The paper aims to review the literature on the system dynamics and its recent application, known as dynamic performance management, to highlight the state of the art and future opportunities on the management of common goods. The authors analyzed 144 documents using a systematic literature review. The results obtained outline a fair number of documents, countries and journals involving the study of system dynamics, but do not cover sufficient research on the linking between the (re)generation of common goods and organizational performance. This paper outlines academic and practical contributions. Firstly, it contributes to the theory of common goods. It provides insight for linking the management of common goods and organizational performance through the use of dynamic performance management approach. Furthermore, it shows scholars the main research opportunities. Secondly, it indicates to practitioners the documents providing useful ideas on the adoption of system dynamics for managing common goods.

This article presents a preliminary System Dynamics model developed to analyze the sustainability of a natural reserve in Mexico: the Tamiahua Wetlands. Wetlands are often referred to as nature's kidneys because they filter contaminants from water. In spite of their importance, wetlands are endangered areas around the world. In order to build the model we take into account the Fishbanks model developed by Meadows (2004) as a starting point. Then, the model considers variables related to changes in total and economically active populations, and contaminants in water. The preliminary model presented in this study implies that fishing activity in the Tamiahua Wetlands, together with contaminants from human activity, have the potential to damage the diversity of species in the ecosystem, endangering its sustainability. Continued work on the model is intended to explore appropriate ways of preserving Tamiahua, providing inhabitants with economic activities that promote the sustainability of the region.

In various stages of a modeling study, the developer/user encounters the need for identifi cation of specifi c values for certain model parameters. However, due to the non-linear nature of these models it is generally hard to foresee changes in the dynamic behavior as a consequence of even marginal parameter changes. Thus, the need for an automated and effi cient search approach is very clear. A behavior pattern-based parameter search approach and results obtained from various test experiments are presented in this paper. The pattern identifi cation algorithm used enables a parameter search process based on qualitative features of a desired behavior pattern, even in the absence of a reference data series. The approach conducts the search process so as to obtain values for the model parameters that yield an output that matches the desired behavior in terms of its qualitative pattern features. Experiments conducted reveal the viability of the approach as a support tool that can be used in model calibration, sensitivity analysis, validation, and policy design stages.
