Simulation-based Optimization: Analysis of the Emergency Department Resources under COVID-19 Conditions

Abstract: The emergency department (ED) is the most important section in every hospital. The ED behaviour is adequately complex, because the ED has several uncertain parameters such as the waiting time of patients or arrival time of patients. To deal with ED complexities, this paper presents a simulation-based optimisation-based meta-model (S-BO-BM-M) to minimise total waiting time of the arriving patients in an emergency department under COVID-19 conditions. A full-factorial design used meta-modelling approach to ident… Show more

“…Additionally, determining the optimal location of warehouses and distribution centers, determining the optimal number of used vehicles, and allocating medical products to pharmacies and hospitals are crucial during the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic [ 18 ]. It may decrease the waiting time of patients and increase resource distribution in the emergency department of hospitals under a COVID-19 environment to boost efficiency [ 19 ]. Throughout healthcare supply chain management, the relevant decision makers have to determine the required quantity of drugs (e.g., chloroquine phosphate, tocilizumab, interpherone alpha 2b, umifenovir, atazanavir, ribavirin, favipiravir, remdesivir, lopinavir, and hydroxy chloroquine) [ 18 ], oxygen, ventilation systems, masks, disinfectants, and other medical supplies that will be distributed among the high-priority locations [ 20 ].…”

“…In addition, as the scale of the problems increases, the energy produced and the profit of the supplier increase. Jahangiri et al ( 2021a ) provided a ranking for key resources in the humanitarian supply chain in the emergency department of Iranian hospital using hybrid decision-making method under COVID-19 conditions. According to the obtain results, nurses in RK 1, receptionists RK 2, general surgeon RK 3, heart residents RK 4 and pulmonologist RK 5.…”

“…The COVID-19 virus has incurred huge human, financial, economic, and social losses imposed on the countries so far [ 10 ]. Therefore, to control the epidemic and its harms, it's highly imperative to effectively perform vaccination and run efficient logistic planning against it [ 11 ]. Due to an uncertain vaccine demand quantity worldwide and not all people being able to simultaneously access the vaccine, the population groups are prioritized to receive the COVID-19 vaccine [ 12 ].…”
