Simulation-Based Analysis of the Effect of Significant Traffic Parameters on Lane Changing for Driving Logic “Cautious” on a Freeway

Abstract: Lane changing of traffic flow is a complicated and significsant behavior for traffic safety on the road. Frequent lane changing can cause serious traffic safety issues, particularly on a two-lane road section of a freeway. This study aimed to analyze the effect of significant traffic parameters for traffic safety on lane change frequency using the studied calibrated values for driving logic “conscious” in VISSIM. Video-recorded traffic data were utilized to calibrate the model under specified traffic condition… Show more

“…For level 2, these main factors were further distributed into fourteen sub-factors and, for level 3, these were further distributed into eight sub-factors. Many researchers considered these specified factors significant in related studies, such as lanechange crashes [42,52], lane-change risks [53], lane-changing simulation [26], discretionary lane-changing [27,54] and road-safety evaluation [44].…”

“…Researchers further developed an exponential probability model to examine the relationship between lane-changing probability and relative gap, as well as relative velocity. Furthermore, a recent study utilized a simulation model to evaluate the influence of significant factors on lane-changing [26].…”

“…Microscopic traffic parameters are changing, in many cases because of lane change actions [20] that introduce challenges in finding the most appropriate traffic model [21,22]. Lane change behavior is a critical point in autonomous driving projects, especially in the case of mixed traffic scenarios that include both autonomous and nonautonomous vehicles [23].…”

“…The weather has a significant impact on real road conditions and dynamics. (Benjamin et al, 2013;Bie et al, 2017) High precision; excellent continuity; high completeness Previous studies (Thomas Schnell et al, 2002;Farooq et al, 2019) (2017) stated that adverse weather indeed has a significant influence on road conditions and traffic dynamics because it lowers the free slow speed, shifts critical density, decreases flow capacity, and contributes to road congestion. In the study, recent historical weather and traffic data used as inputs into real-time traffic prediction and control.…”
