Simulation and mock code: A safe way for nursing students to learn

Abstract: Introduction:It is better for students to experience stressful clinical events in a simulation lab rather than to experience the event in a clinical setting where a patient's life is at stake. Aim:The aim of this study was to discover if participation in a mock code with a simulation manikin would result in increased knowledge in nursing students as well as a safe way to learn the nursing interventions required during a code. Methods: Students were given a 10-item multiple choice pre-test. The Advanced Cardiac … Show more

“…[14,15] Simulation's other advantage is creating an open educational environment that frees learners to make mistakes without risk to patient safety, which further reinforces memory and retention. [16,17] Finally, skill and knowledge decay is known to occur over time after training, so team-based simulation using high-fidelity mannequins is endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA) to enhance retention of the resuscitation training. [18] Communication, specifically "Activation of the emergency response system", is a recognized important aspect of resuscitation and emergency care of a deteriorating patient in a facility, such that it is a component of the AHA's inpatient "Chain of Survival" algorithm.…”

“…The National League for Nursing (NLN) endorsed this study and the findings (2015).Furthermore, they promote simulation as an effective and evidence-based method for fostering critical thinking and reasoning skills for patient care [2]. In addition to those benefits of simulation, this methodology has been found to facilitate teamwork and mastery of practical skills related to clinical care [3][4][5]as well as cognitive skills [6,7].Simulation based learning has been found to be an effective tool to improve early recognition of clinical decline [8]and build confidence and knowledge in critical care situations [9].For example, students are paired together as a teaching strategy to foster team communication and collaboration. Participant preparation is necessary for students to successfully accomplish simulation objectives [10].Unlike a classroom setting or a paper and pencil test, simulation allows the learner to function in an environment that is as close as possible to an actual clinical situation and provides them the opportunity to "think on their feet, not in their seat" [11].…”

“…As demonstrated by the pre/post-ΜСQѕ test, students performed better after the completion of the seminar. [34] This may be due to students of the simulation group had given a chance for demonstration and make a mistake and redemonstration and correction of their mistakes that had led to gaining the confidence of improving practical skills.…”
