An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) network specifies a novel type of Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) in which drones serve as nodes and facilitate the retransmission of messages to their final destinations. Aside from its military application, it has recently begun to seep into the civilian sector. Similar to MANET and vehicular ad hoc networks, Flying Ad hoc Networks (FANET) are a subset of ad hoc networks. An FANET is different because it is founded on UAVs. Due to the characteristics of this sort of network, which is defined by a highly changing topology in a 3D environment, we must employ an adjusted configuration method to ensure good routing performance. Therefore, to deal with this problem, a technique that responds to any change in topology by always finding the best route is required. In this work, we propose a new protocol based on the hybrid optimization of the 2-opt heuristic and Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA), called HB-AODV. In order to locate its prey, a badger must move slowly and continuously while using scent markers and mouse-digging skills to catch it. In other words, the most efficient routes in terms of the number of hops are identified. Several simulations were conducted via the 3D version of Network Simulator (NS-2) on different deployment strategies. In comparison to AODV, DSDV, and AntHocNet, the obtained results demonstrated the proposed scheme’s good performance in terms of quality of service metrics.

Livestock Management on Grazing Field: A FANET Based Approach

In recent times, designated grazing areas/fields or routes for livestock grazing are usually defined. Hence, their herding activities’ success relies on data extracted from aerial photographs. As such, a direct and cost-effective way of monitoring livestock for perimeter coverage and in other natural situations is required. This paper presents a coverage solution involving multiple unmanned aerial vehicles interacting. The presented approach is built on a graph, with geographic coordinates set such that several Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can successfully cover the area. The maximum flying time determines the number of UAVs employed for coverage. The proposed solution is thought to solve some practical problems encountered during the execution of the task with actual UAVs. It is suitable for long-term monitoring of animal behavior under various weather conditions and observing the relationship between livestock distribution and available resources on a grazing field. The simulation was carried out using MATLAB and aerial images from Google Earth.

Flying ad hoc networks (FANETs) are visioned to unlock the potential of the Internet of Drones in various application scenarios like surveillance, agriculture, health care, disaster management, and rescue operations. As the unmanned aerial vehicles possess fast movements and frequent topological variations, selection of the next hop, self‐adaptation, and avoidance of dissemination loops have proven to be the challenging issues that have a considerable impact on the performance of a FANET. We propose a performance‐aware routing mechanism, G‐OLSR, for efficient communication and collaboration among the unmanned aerial vehicles in a FANET environment. The self‐adaptation of the network in case of any topological changes is considered in the proposed mechanism. Moreover, the proposed mechanism avoids the dissemination loops and it, consequently, improves the performance of the network. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism performs better in terms of delay, message overhead, packet delivery ratio, and throughput than Optimized Link State Routing.
