“…Running on the ninety strips representing the RASS in this framework, the SASS detected 49,441 X-ray sources (multiple detections removed, see Cruddace et al [1991] for details of the source detection procedure) which constitute the X-ray sample upon which most of the statistical RASS studies performed to date are based. Note that, although, in this first processing of the survey data, the SASS provided count rates in various energy bands, the actual source detection was performed exclusively in the PSPC broad band, i.e., in the energy range from 0.1 − 2.4 keV.…”

“…There are three main differences with respect to the early sliding‐box search methods (e.g. Gioia et al 1990; Cruddace et al 1991): the background is estimated from the whole field rather than from the edges of the detection aperture; a maximum‐likelihood ratio technique assuming Poisson fluctuations (Cash 1979), rather than Gaussian, is used; and the data are compared with a model profile of the PSF to assess the significance of any possible source. The change in background subtraction reduces the chance of missing extended sources because they artificially increase the background estimate.…”

“…The 2 PSPCs on board ROSAT were the instruments in use for the entire RASS. Descriptions of the observing methods employed during the survey, as well as the data reduction techniques, can be found in Cruddace et al (1991).…”
