Natural medicines were the only option for the prevention and treatment of human diseases for thousands of years. Natural products are important sources for drug development. The amounts of bioactive natural products in natural medicines are always fairly low. Today, it is very crucial to develop effective and selective methods for the extraction and isolation of those bioactive natural products. This paper intends to provide a comprehensive view of a variety of methods used in the extraction and isolation of natural products. This paper also presents the advantage, disadvantage and practical examples of conventional and modern techniques involved in natural products research.

Flax cyclic peptides (orbitides, linusorbs (LOs)) [1-8-NαC],[1-MetO2]-linusorb B1 ([MetO2]-LO1) and [1-9-NαC],[1-MetO2]-linusorb B2 ([MetO2]-LO2) are biologically active. These LOs lack active nuclei commonly used in peptide modification. We have developed reactions to activate methionine methyl sulphide to produce stable derivatives. In these reactions, LOs are converted to sulfonium intermediates and subsequently to derivatives containing active nuclei while preserving their fundamental structures. The reaction conditions preserved cyclic peptide fundamental structure and organic solvent solubility. [Met]-LO1 and [Met]-LO2 analogues containing activated groups (-CN, -COOEt, and -NH2 ) in the form of methionine, methionine (S)-oxide, and methionine (S,S)-dioxide amino acids were synthesized and characterized by LCMS and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. Coumarin orbitide complexes produced in this manner bind Eu(3+) yielding FRET compounds that absorb energy through coumarin antennae and emit photons at lanthanide wavelengths.

The current concern for health has raised the importance of natural micronutrients in edible oils and fats. Different from common micronutrients, e.g., tocopherols, tocotrienols, stigmasterol and sitosterol, new and emerging specialty micronutrients, such as plastochromanol‐8, resveratrol, phenylpropanoid amides of 5‐hydroxytryptamine, lanosterol, ergosterol and cyclolinopeptides, are becoming increasingly popular among health‐conscious people. The first three are phenolic compounds, the forth and fifth sterols, and sixth a peptide. These micronutrients are usually present in certain oils or oilseed‐related byproducts, including rapeseed, peanut, flaxseed, tea seed, and camellia oils, and safflower seed cakes, all of which are the highly valuable products of the lipid industry in China nowadays. The first object of this review is to discuss the characteristics of the micronutrients, mainly including their varieties, structures, and sources. Second, the antioxidant activities and indicative functions for oil quality were also analyzed in detail. Third, refining techniques, breeding programs and extraction methods are suggested. Suitable modification treatments of certain micronutrients are also advocated to make them easy to incorporate in other foods.
