Simulated body fluid nucleation of poly(vinyl alcohol)/nanohydroxyapatite hydrogels

Abstract: Novel poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) or 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and nanohydroxyapatite (nanoHAp) electrospinning-produced membranes were evaluated, in terms of their bioactivity under exposure to simulated body fluid (SBF). After soaking them in SBF for 5, 8 and 15 days, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show the accumulation of calcium carbonate or calcium phosphate SBF on the surface of the nanohydroxyapatite (nanoHAp). This indicates that there might be an increased bioac… Show more

“…The HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite showed higher gain weight compared to the bare PEEK. HA acts as nucleation points and helps the deposition of calcium phosphate or calcium carbonate on the surface of the HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite 47 . Porous HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite showed higher gained weight than that of typical HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite which can be attributed to the higher surface area of three‐dimensional porous surface of porous HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite in comparison by 2D rough surface of typical HA/PEEK surface nanocomposite.…”

“…Based on many studies, it has been proven that the ions contained in the surrounding liquid have a major influence on the sorption capacity of hydrogels and the density of the polymer network. Studies show a high absorption capacity of distilled water, which does not contain added elements, while the smallest capacity is found in SBF liquid, where elements such as Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , Cl − , HCO 3 − , HPO 4 2− or SO 4 2− are present [11,12]. Light plays an important role because some polymers are crosslinked under UV conditions.…”
