Simulated Annealing for volcano muography

Abstract: We discuss the geophysical inversion methodology for volcanic muography based on the Simulated Annealing algorithm, using a semi-empirical model of the muon flux reaching the volcano, its surrounding topography and a framework for the energy loss of muons in rock. We determined the minimum muon energy-as function of the arrival direction-needed to cross the volcanic building, the emerging integrated flux of muons and the density profile inside a model of Cerro Machín volcano (Tolima, Colombia) within a maximum… Show more

“…The inversion algorithm reconstructed the density differences inside the emulated Cerro Machín structure from the measured muon flux within a 1% error. The result showed a remarkable density contrast between the volcanic duct, the encasing rock, and the fumarole area [18].…”

“…There exist two main techniques: Inversion methods and filteredback projections. Inversion methods combine muography with gravimetry data (Tanaka et al(2010); Nishiyama et al(2014); Guardincerri et al(2017); Vesga-Ramírez et al(2021)). Barnound and collaborators inverted gravimetric and muographic data of the Puy de Dôme volcano.…”

“…For this last one, several applications have been proposed, such as prospecting [19,20], imaging of underground structures [17], and volcano muography [12,21]. In Latin America, detectors have been developed for similar purposes in Mexico [4], Colombia [5,6,8], and Argentina [9] and are also currently under development in Peru.…”
