Simplified Seismic Analysis of Disordered Masonry Towers

Abstract: The structural assessment of existing masonry towers under exceptional loads, such as earthquake loads, requires reliable and expedite methods of analysis. These approaches should take into account both the specific nonlinear behavior of the material (for instance, the small tensile strength) and the randomness that affect the masonry material's properties (in some cases the distribution of the elastic parameters too). Considering the need of simplified but effective methods to assess the seismic response of s… Show more

“…The knowledge of the geometry and mechanical properties of materials is often a weakness for the structural engineer involved in structural analyses and assessment. For bell towers and masonry towers in general, an accurate structural model is mandatory, when the quantification of structural vulnerability is required, as shown in [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Different methods of analysis, including nonlinear dynamics are used to study the seismic response of slender masonry towers [8][9][10][11], so it is important that accurate geometrical and mechanical inputs are available, otherwise sophisticated analyses do not appear meaningful.…”

“…The nonlinear system of equations was solved by an incremental Newton-Raphson method. Details of the T analyses are reported in [15]. If for instance the force is harmonic, then the top displacement of the cantilever beam exhibits a slight hysteretic behavior, as shown in Fig.…”
