Simplification of 3D Triangular Mesh for Level of Detail Computation

Abstract: Advance three-dimensional (3D) scanning devices can create very detail complex 3D polygonal models. Though the random access memory (RAM) and parallel computing in graphics card are enormously improved, many modelers still confront with intricacy of slow computing due to exponential increase of number of polygons for realistic look of surface models. In this paper, a simple and fast triangular mesh simplification method based on half-edge collapsed scheme is proposed. The Euclidean distance of each triangle ed… Show more

“…Mesh validity ensures that the mesh is a closed and simple manifold [2]. The mesh complexity (number of mesh elements) has a trade-off with efficiency, memory usage, and accuracy [52], [53]. Complex meshes are more accurate (see Figure 3), whereas simple meshes are more efficient (see Figure 4).…”

“…However, mesh complexity affects efficiency in downstream applications. Therefore, mesh simplification is used to minimize the input mesh complexity for efficient computation and optimal memory consumption [20], [53]. To balance the tradeoff between accuracy and efficiency, the mesh must be simplified to an optimal level of detail.…”

“…Therefore, IAR systems not only need to provide AR functionality, but also have to be able to exchange and manage content as fast as possible. In the past, researchers have addressed the high-detail 3D content transfer speed limitations mainly by trying to simplify or decimate such content [ 23 , 24 , 25 ], but although this can be useful in some cases, the loss of certain details in industrial designs may derive into problems (e.g., when using a simplified 3D design as a reference during manufacturing or in quality checks).…”

“…In research on 3DCM, great progress has been made on the technology of large-scale terrain continuous LODs based on real data. Many continuous LOD algorithms based on regular grids have realized the real-time display of large-scale terrain [17][18][19][20][21]. However, the research of continuous LOD technology for buildings is still in its infancy.…”
