Simple Wireless Impedance Pneumography System for Unobtrusive Sensing of Respiration

Abstract: This extended paper presents the development and implementation at a prototype level of a wireless, low-cost system for the measurement of the electrical bioimpedance of the chest with two channels using the AD5933 in a bipolar electrode configuration to measure impedance pneumography. The measurement device works for impedance measurements ranging from 1 Ω to 1800 Ω. Fifteen volunteers were measured with the prototype. We found that the left hemithorax has higher impedance compared to the right hemithorax, an… Show more

“…The significant increase in thoracic impedance while aggressive inhaling is due to the presence of increased www.nature.com/scientificreports/ air inside the thorax region and as air is less conductive therefore the total impedance of the thorax region increases 59,66 . Similarly, the significant decrease in thoracic impedance while aggressive exhaling is due to the absence of air and is well in accordance with the expected outcomes of the thoracic impedance 59,67,68 .…”

“…The known impedance is chosen based on its relevance with the unknown impedance. For this purpose, we chose an RC circuit, as shown in Figure 3a, as it resembles the thorax region [37]. As the thoracic region responds to frequencies between 1 and 100 K, therefore, we programmed the thoracic impedance sensor at 50 KHz (a commonly used frequency for monofrequency thoracic impedance systems) with V out set to be 2V pk-pk.…”

“…However, this system is currently too bulky and uncomfortable for an infant to wear. Other commonly used techniques to detect RR are electrical impedance pneumography (EIP), electrical impedance tomography (EIT), and respiratory inductance plethysmography (RIP) [11]. EIP and EIT are both focused on the bio-impedance measurement of the lung.…”
