Simple Technique for Transvaginal Aspiration of a Tubo-Ovarian Abscess

Abstract: Large tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOAs) usually require drainage or operative management in addition to antibiotics. All previous reports of transvaginal aspiration have been described utilizing a needle/biopsy guidance system, which may not be available to many obstetrician/gynecologists. We present a simple technique for transvaginal drainage of large TOAs using a long angiocath needle under transabdominal ultrasound guidance in a patient in whom percutaneous drainage and operative management were not ideal opti… Show more

“…The risk factors related to TOA resemble the risk factors of PID. Past PID in personal history is also a significant risk factor for TOA (4). Pelvic inflammatory disease will have long term complications including chronic abdominal pain, ectopic pregnancy and infertility in almost 25% of women because of delayed medical therapy because of varying clinical features and lack of specific laboratory tests (5).…”
