An equation is derived to express the sensitivity of daily, watercolumn production by phytoplankton in the ocean to variations in irradiance at the sea surface. Assuming no spectral effects, and a vertically uniform chlorophyll profile, the sensitivity is a function only of the dimensionless irradiance. Spectral effects can be accounted for as a function of the chlorophyll concentration. At the global scale, the relative reduction in daily production consequent on halving the surface irradiance (representing the expected scope for variation in surface irradiance under natural conditions) is found to be from 30 to 40%. Choice of data source for irradiance may incur a further systematic error of up to 15%. Given that local irradiance (the principal forcing for primary production) may vary from day to day, the issue of how to archive production data for the most generality is discussed and recommendations made in this regard.

Abstract-The variability of the solar spectra in the field may reduce the annual energy yield of multij unction solar cells. It would, therefore, be desirable to implement a cell design procedure based on the maximization of the annual energy yield. In this study, we present a measurement technique to generate maps of the real performance of the solar cell for a range of light spectrum contents using a solar simulator with a computer-controllable spectral content. These performance maps are demonstrated to be a powerful tool for analyzing the characteristics of any given set of annual spectra representative of a site and their influence on the energy yield of any solar cell. The effect of luminescence coupling on buffering against variations of the spectrum and improving the annual energy yield is demonstrated using this method.

Abstract:In this paper, a method of optimizing a thermal barrier cosmetic and spectral selective cosmetic by controlling the particle size and material is proposed as a countermeasure to heatstroke. The radiative properties of single cosmetic particles of a wide range of particle sizes and wavelengths in non-absorbing air were calculated in this study based on the Mie theory. Al 2 O 3 , TiO 2 , Au, and Ag were used as the material of the cosmetic particle. The radiative property of a particle cloud in dependent scattering was calculated. The radiative transfer in the cosmetic layer was analyzed, and the spectral reflectance of the cosmetic layer on the human skin was calculated. A new parameter was defined to quantitatively evaluate the performance of the thermal barrier cosmetic and spectral selective cosmetic. For the thermal barrier cosmetic, the Al 2 O 3 particle was determined to be suitable, and its size was optimized. For the spectral selective cosmetic, the Au particle was likewise determined to be suitable, and its size was optimized. Our cosmetics satisfied both aesthetic and thermal concerns.
