Simple Sequence Repeat Diversity among Soybean Plant Introductions and Elite Genotypes

Abstract: The use of molecular markers to facilitate the introgression of plant introduction (PI) germplasm into elite soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] cultivars will depend on the amount of polymorphism that exists between elite genotypes and PIs. The objective of this study was to assess the simple sequence repeat (SSR) diversity of 39 elite soybean genotypes (Elites) and 40 PIs that were selected for high yield potential. A total of 397 alleles were detected among the 79 genotypes at 74 SSR marker loci. The number of… Show more

“…The abundant allelic variation per locus in this study (19.7) exceeded the previous reported 5.0-15.8 alleles per locus (Maughan et al 1995;Diwan and Cregan 1997;Narvel et al 2000;Abe et al 2003). This may be caused by our much extended sampling.…”

“…STRUCTURE has been successfully applied on the genetic structure analyses of, for example, human (Rosenberg et al 2002), dog (Parker et al 2004), and maize (Remington et al 2001;Liu et al 2003). The program can handle large numbers of simple sequence repeat (SSR) or microsatellite markers, which are widely used because they are highly polymorphic, abundantly available and randomly distributed in the genome, and codominantly inherited (McGregor et al 2000;Narvel et al 2000).…”

“…High levels of polymorphism were revealed in soybean by the use of neutral SSR markers, for both the number of alleles per locus and gene diversity (Akkaya et al, 1992;Narvel et al, 2000;Priolli et al, 2002;Priolli et al, 2010). In this study, using SSR markers and considering the parameters of BNF and protein content, we have also observed high variability amongst both modern germoplasms cultivated in Brazil and ancestral lines.…”

Segundo estes autores, do total de 397 alelos de 74 locos SSRs utilizados, 138 foram exclusivos dos PIs e 32 das cultivares-elite.…”
