Objective: To describe a cheap, minimally painful and widely usable method for retrieving ureteral stents by using an ureteroscope. Subjects and Methods: Sixty-seven patients with ureteral stents were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomized into a cystoscopic (35 patients) and a ureteroscopic (32 patients) group. All stents were retrieved by a flexible cystoscope in the first group and by a ureteroscope in the second group under local anesthesia. Patients in each group were assessed for stented time, stent side, cause of stent placement, operative time, peroperative pain, postoperative pain, irritative voiding symptoms and hematuria. Also costs of instruments were calculated. Results: Stents were successfully retrieved in 67 patients. There were no statistical differences in the two groups regarding patient gender and age or stent side, operative time, stented time, mean operative pain score, irritative voiding symptom scores and hematuria. Total selling price was USD 20.399 for flexible instruments and USD 10.516 for rigid ones. Total maintenance price was higher in flexible instruments than in the rigid ones (USD 197.8 and 51.7 per use, respectively). Conclusion: Ureteroscopic stent retrieval is a minimally painful, safe and highly tolerable method under local anesthesia as well as flexible cystoscopic retrieval. Also, it is a cheap and widely usable method.

Aim:The standard method for retrieving the ureteral stents is the cystoscopic technique. We describe a minimally painful method for retrieving ureteral stents by using an ureteroscope.Methods: A total of 60 patients with ureteral stents were enrolled in this study. The patients were randomized into a cystoscopic (30 cases) and an ureteroscopic (30 cases) group. All stents were retrieved by a cystoscope in the first group and by an ureteroscope in the second group, under topical anesthesia. Patients in each group were assessed for stented time, stent side and reason of stent placement, operative time, peroperative pain, postoperative pain, irritative voiding symptoms and hematuria.Results: Stents were successfully retrieved in 60 patients. There were no statistical differences in the two groups regarding patient's gender and age or stent side, operative time and stented time (p>0.05). Mean operative pain score was significantly higher in the cystoscopic group than in the ureteroscopic group (p<0.01). The irritative voiding symptom scores and hematuria were more prevalent in the first group than the second (p< 0.05). Conclusion:In present study ureteroscopic stent retrieval was found to be minimally a painful, safe and reliable method. The ureteroscopic retrieval procedure is highly tolerable by patients than the cystoscopic retrieval. We suggest that it may be the standard technique for stent retrieval.

BackgroundFlexible cystoscopy has become an accepted alternative for stent retrieval. However, it is associated with higher cost. Some reports have described experiences of using rigid ureteroscope to retrieve ureteral stents. We compared rigid ureteroscopic to flexible cystoscopic retrieval of ureteral stents in a prospective and randomized clinical trial.MethodsThree hundred patients treated with ureteral stents between July 2012 and July 2013 were accrued in this study. These patients were divided into two groups using the random number table method. Group A, with 162 patients, had stents removed with a flexible cystoscope and Group B, with 138 patients, had stents removed with a rigid ureteroscope. All procedures were performed under topical anesthesia by the same urologist. Patients in each group were compared in terms of preoperative, perioperative, and postoperative data. Postoperative data were collected using telephone interview on the postoperative day two. The postoperative questionnaire used included three items: hematuria, irritable bladder symptoms, and pain scores.ResultsAll the stents were retrieved successfully. No statistical differences were noted between the two groups in terms of gender, age, laterality and duration of the stents, operative time, postoperative hematuria, irritable bladder symptoms, and pain scores. The per-use cost of instrument was much higher for the flexible cystoscopic group, RMB 723.1 versus 214.3 (USD 107.9 versus 28.2), P < 0.05.ConclusionUreteral stent retrieval using rigid ureteroscope under topical anesthesia is as safe and effective as flexible cystoscope but with a much lower cost to patients.Trial registrationThis study was registered with Chinese Clinical Trial Registry on March 27, 2017 (retrospective registration) with a trial registration number of ChiCTR-IOR-17010986.
