Simple regenerating codes: Network coding for cloud storage

Abstract: Abstract-Network codes designed specifically for distributed storage systems have the potential to provide dramatically higher storage efficiency for the same availability. One main challenge in the design of such codes is the exact repair problem: if a node storing encoded information fails, in order to maintain the same level of reliability we need to create encoded information at a new node. One of the main open problems in this emerging area has been the design of simple coding schemes that allow exact and… Show more

“…In cases where certain storage nodes fail, the system may be repaired by populating the replacement nodes with linear combinations of a subset of the coded blocks from the surviving nodes in the system. In summary, the promising research results on applying NC motivate its application in cloud storage systems [12].…”

“…For storage efficiency, network code (or erasure code) can be applied [11], [16], [17], where each node stores the network coded data blocks rather than their original forms. When a data block is lost due to the node failure, it can be reconstructed at a new node by performing the following algorithm digit-bydigit:…”

“…Network coding in cloud-based scenarios: In wired networks and cloud data centers network coding can be used to improve redundancy and reliability of distributed storage systems [16], [17] by increasing fault tolerance. With a focus on cloudbased multimedia applications, network coding can optimize power consumption of co-located user terminals [18] and improve cooperative download experience of mobile users [19].…”
