Simple Recording Spring Balance

Abstract: A simple recording balance has been designed for use in high temperature oxidation studies. A helical spring is the weighing mechanism; a light beam and silicon solar cell, the spring position detector. The signal from the solar cell is fed directly to a strip chart recorder without prior amplification. The construction allows for heating of the system which permits the use of the balance in condensable atmospheres.
