Simple intermittent resistance activity mitigates the detrimental effect of prolonged unbroken sitting on arterial function in overweight and obese adults

Abstract: Prolonged sitting contributes to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. The underlying mechanisms are unknown, but may include changes in arterial function and vasoactive mediators. We examined the effects of prolonged unbroken sitting, relative to regular active interruptions to sitting time, on arterial function in adults at increased CVD risk. In a randomized crossover trial, 19 sedentary overweight/obese adults (mean±SD 57±12 yrs), completed two laboratory-based conditions: five hours uninterrupted sitting (SI… Show more

“…Recently, it has been reported in overweight/obese adults that prolonged sitting augments circulating levels of endothelial-derived vasoconstrictors (i.e., Endothelin-1), 30 which in theory, could attenuate vasodilatory function and perhaps even enhance vasoconstrictor responses to reductions in blood flow. However, our data are not supportive of this, as L-FMC did not change after sitting.…”

“…As previously described , this study involved two acute experimental conditions (each of 6 hours’ duration) separated by a minimum 6‐day washout period. The experimental conditions were prolonged uninterrupted sitting (SIT) and sitting that was regularly interrupted with SRAs.…”

“…The primary outcome of the study was endothelial function, as previously reported , with postprandial glucose and insulin responses (determined as incremental area under the curve [iAUC]) being predefined secondary outcomes. It was determined that 19 completions would be required to see the anticipated effect size in the primary outcome.…”

“… 81) On the other hand, it has been shown that prolonged sitting contributes to CVD risk while intermittent resistance activity can mitigate this detrimental effect of prolonged unbroken sitting in overweight and obese adults. 82) Some authors suggest that appropriately tailored exercise regimen for every CVD risk patient should be planed and exercise prescription given to patients with CVD risk factors, including elevated plasma TG-rich particles. 83) …”
