Simple, green, ultrasound-assisted preparation of novel core–shell microcapsules from octyl methoxycinnamate and oligomeric proanthocyanidins for UV-stable sunscreen

Abstract: With oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) as the outer shell and ultraviolet absorbers (OMC) as the inner core, OMC/OPCs composite microcapsules were prepared and characterized, and their UV resistance was studied.

“…This was attributed to the micelle creating an enhanced polar microenvironment, which reduces the propensity of avobenzone to diketonize and hence photodegrade. Further work on the encapsulation of organic sunscreens into rationally designed gels or nanoparticles may well provide a pathway further between to and improved performance ( Qiu et al, 2018 ; Song et al, 2021 ).…”

“…In order to solve this problem, several strategies, such as encapsulation, inclusion of antioxidants and photo stabilizers have been reported [16] . In addition, proanthocyanidins are formed by combining different amounts of catechins or epicatechins and can be classified into higher molecular weight polymers (polymeric procyanidins, PPC) and lower molecular weight polymers (oligomeric procyanidins, OPC) [17] . Based on the less steric hindrance of OPC, it has been widely used in chemical sunscreens as the effective UV photodegradation inhibitors of sunscreen molecules [17,18] .…”

“…[17] Based on the less steric hindrance of OPC, it has been widely used in chemical sunscreens as the effective UV photodegradation inhibitors of sunscreen molecules. [17,18] Meanwhile, OPC show excellent antioxidant activity and UV-proof properties owing to the presence of a large number of phenolic hydroxyl groups and abundant UV-absorbing groups (benzene rings and conjugated structures), which is expected to play an important role in promoting the development of TiO 2 -based sunscreen emulsion. [12,19] Therefore, in this work, TiO 2 nanoparticles and OPC at low concentration were used as stabilizers to prepare oil-in-water (O/W) novel emulsions encapsulated the AVB in oil phase.…”

“… 13 Because of their aromatic structure, proanthocyanidins strongly absorb UV light and have a good prospects for use in sunscreens. 14 One study 15 showed that the sun protection factor (SPF) of high-concentration proanthocyanidins from red raspberry seeds was much higher than that of commercially available sunscreens, confirming the potential of proanthocyanidins as natural ingredients for highly UV-blocking sunscreens.…”
