Simple fluorescence optosensing probe for spermine based on ciprofloxacin-Tb3+ complexation

Abstract: We developed a facile detection method of spermine based on the fluorescence (FL) quenching of the ciprofloxacin-Tb3+ complex, which shows astrong green emission. Ciprofloxacin (CP) makes efficient bondings to Tb3+ ion as a linker molecule through carboxylic and ketone groups to form a kind of lanthanide coordination polymer. The addition of spermine that competes with Tb3+ ions for the interaction with CP due to its positive charge brings about weakened coordination linkage of CP and Tb3+. The probe exhibited… Show more

“…It is a biogenic amine that plays essential roles in various biological processes. Nghia et al [35] proposed a new paper-strip-based method for sensing spermine that is both simple and highly efficient. This method relies on the fluorescence quenching of the ciprofloxacin-Tb 3+ complex by spermine.…”

“…Detection of spermine based on the fluorescence quenching of the ciprofloxacin-Tb 3+ complex was also reported by Nghia. 64 Ciprofloxacin links with Tb 3+ ions through the carboxylic and ketone groups. Upon addition of spermine that competes with Tb 3+ ions for the interaction with ciprofloxacin due to its positive charge, the coordination linkage diminishes between ciprofloxacin and lanthanide ions, which drastically reduces the fluorescence.…”

“…Thus either the off–on–off 14–16 or on–off–on 17 phenomenon has been used for SPM and SPD detection. In a two component process, a fluorescent dye forms a host–guest complex with metals such as Tb 3+ , 18 Cu 2+ , 19–21 Ag + , 22,23 Au 3+ , 24,25 Fe 3+ (ref. 26), etc.…”
