Simple and compact low-energy Mott polarization analyzer

Abstract: A URV compatible Mott polarization analyzer is described that employs electron accelerating voltages of -20 kV. The efficiency of the analyzer, ~ 3 X 10--5 , is competitive with those provided by other polarimeters. The present analyzer is considerably simpler and more compact than earlier designs arld can be used to undertake energy-and angle-resolved polarization measurements with input beam currents below _10--14 A.

“…The spin polarization of the emitted low-energy secondary electrons is determined with a 25 keV retarding-field Mott detector based on the Rice design. [31,32] A thin gold foil is used as scatter target. Electron gun and spin polarization detector enclose an angle of 70 • .…”

“…Since their introduction in the late 1980s [50], compact retarding Mott polarimeters have proved a popular choice for integration with electron energy analyzers for photoemission. In particular, the period from 2000 to 2010 witnessed many examples of the incorporation of this simple robust type of polarimeter into instrumentation in both university and synchrotron radiation laboratories [14,16,17,22,30,32,33,[51][52][53][54][55][56].…”

“…4 An effective approach involves utilization of an electron time-of-flight ͑TOF͒ analyzer with a spin detector, 5,6 as all the electrons are spin-and energy-resolved simultaneously regardless of their kinetic energy. Among the various methods of spin detection [7][8][9] compact Mott polarimeters based on medium energy electron scattering from a Au target 10,11 is well matched to TOF electron analysis because of the short and uniform transit time of electrons in the polarimeter, which is essential for the preservation of the overall energy resolution.…”
