Simple and comminuted displaced olecranon fractures: a clinical comparison between tension band wiring and plate fixation techniques

Abstract: The findings of this study indicate that both with the use of TBW and plate fixation excellent/good clinical outcomes with minimal loss of physical capacity, little pain and disability can be obtained in the majority of patients with simple and comminuted displaced olecranon fractures. Hardware removal was most frequently observed after TBW.

“…The flexion of the elbow was recorded by three included researches [10, 11, 17]. Figure 5 showed that the flexion of the elbow did not have a significant difference between TBW and PF (SMD = −0.06, 95% CI = −0.52 to 0.39, p  = 0.78).…”

“…Operative fixation of displaced olecranon fractures achieves union and excellent elbow function but is associated with reoperation, usually for implant removal [8,20,21]. A substantial rate of second surgeries to remove tension band wires led orthopaedic surgeons to consider alternatives such as plate fixation [14] or intramedullary screws or rods [13] for olecranon fractures [3,7].…”
