SimpactCyan 1.0: An Open-source Simulator for Individual-Based Models in HIV Epidemiology with R and Python Interfaces

Abstract: SimpactCyan is an open-source simulator for individual-based models in HIV epidemiology. Its core algorithm is written in C++ for computational efficiency, while the R and Python interfaces aim to make the tool accessible to the fast-growing community of R and Python users. Transmission, treatment and prevention of HIV infections in dynamic sexual networks are simulated by discrete events. A generic “intervention” event allows model parameters to be changed over time, and can be used to model medical and behav… Show more

“…In this simulation study, we considered a population of men and women within a generalized HIV epidemic in a heterosexual network. The simulation was conducted using agent-based models (ABMs) with Simpact Cyan 1.0 simulation tool [18], which simulated dynamic sexual network, HIV transmission dynamic, and viral evolution across the transmission network. More explicitly, the dynamic of sexual network is simulated through establishment and dissolution of sexual partnerships.…”

“…Simpact Cyan 1.0 ( http://www.simpact.org/ ) 15 is a freely available framework for developing IBMs to simulate HIV transmission, progression and treatment. Models developed with Simpact Cyan 1.0 are event-driven, which means that the models are not updated at fixed time intervals, but at every time an event happens, making Simpact Cyan 1.0 a continuous-time simulation modelling framework.…”

“…Simpact Cyan 1.0 modeling framework Simpact Cyan 1.0 is a open-source framework for constructing individual-based models for simulating the transmission, diagnosis and treatment of HIV [21]. The program models each individual in a heterosexual or homosexual population, and the sexual relationships between individuals.…”
