Similarity in symptom patterns of posttraumatic stress among disaster-survivors: a three-step latent profile analysis

Abstract: Background: Individuals express symptoms of posttraumatic stress in various ways, noted for example in the many symptom combinations in the diagnostic manuals. Studies aiming to examine differences of symptom presentations by extracting latent classes or profiles indicate both the presence of subtypes with differing symptomatology and subtypes distinguished by severity levels. Few studies have examined subtype associations with long-term outcomes. Objective: The current study aimed to apply latent profile analy… Show more

“…Lastly, tailored-made interventions for sub-populations become possible to suit their needs better ( Roeser et al., 1998 ). Person-centered analyses have been used in health behavior studies, for example, examining the profiles of outcome expectancies on physical activity ( Li, 2013 ), symptoms pattern of posttraumatic stress disorder ( Bondjers et al., 2018 ), and investing relationship between parent prevention communication profiles and adolescent substance use ( Choi et al., 2017 ).…”

“…High prevalence of PTSD among survivors of disaster, as well as risk of exposure to recurrent disaster and trauma due to effects of climate change, may reasonably warrant national and community-level investments in the four types of preemptive adaptations independently identified both in our interviews of diverse community respondents and in NCA4, to bolster community resilience to climate change (Bondjers, Willebrand, & Arnberg, 2018;Lowe et al, 2013;Suar, 2016;van Loey, van de Schoot, & Faber, 2012). Investments into these preemptive adaptations-and timely further study-may serve to identify avenues to mitigate some of the adverse consequences of climate changeassociated disaster events, such as population trauma.…”

“…In the absence of an accurate and precise reference standard, LPA has been widely employed to identify the symptom characteristics and to further calculate and determine optimal cut-off points of assessment instruments (54)(55)(56). LPA is a person-centered statistical method that employs latent profile model (LPM) to divide population into multiple profiles, and it focuses on identifying latent subpopulations within a population based on a set of continuous variables (57)(58)(59). Despite the possible arbitrariness for LPA in determining the number of class members due to its semi-subjective properties, the misclassification rate is relatively low, and it could produce more reasonable results compared with some other classification approaches (60)(61)(62).…”
