Similarity-based regression test case prioritization

Abstract: Abstract-With the continuous evolution of software systems, test suites often grow very large. Rerunning all test cases may be impractical in regression testing under limited resources. Coverage-based test case prioritization techniques have been proposed to improve the effectiveness of regression testing. The original test suite often contains some test cases which are designed for exercising production features or exceptional behaviors, rather than for code coverage. Therefore, coverage-based prioritization … Show more

“…Similarity-based algorithms have also been applied to regression test case prioritization, based on the distances between pair-wise test cases (Wang et al 2015), using historical failure data (Noor and Hemmati 2015) or topics models (Thomas et al 2014). Research effort have also been devoted to similarity-based selection techniques, in particular, in the model-based domain (Hemmati et al 2013).…”

“…Ripon et al [19] introduce a REPiR approach by reducing the regression test prioritization to a standard Information Retrieval problem such that the differences between two program versions form the query and the tests constitute the document collection. Wang et al [20] propose a global similarity-based regression test case prioritization approach based on the distance between pair-wise test cases.…”

“…To address this problem, a number of techniques and framework have been proposed to make the reduction process more effective which is based on test case classification according to similarity degree measured by a distance function [2,[15][16]. Diversity and similarity-based test case selection and prioritization are one of the new approaches with favourable output [17][18][19].…”

“…Chunrong et al [27] proposed different similarity based prioritization techniques to order the test cases according to their importance with the help of edit distances. Wang et al [19] proposed global similarity based prioritization to overcome the problems that are not effectively solved by coverage based prioritization techniques. All the above techniques have their common objective i.e.…”
