“…Shrub species with high concentrations of defense chemicals such as soluble phenols mostly dominate the plant cover in arid ecosystems (Friedman, 1995; Saraví Cisneros et al., 2013, 2022; Segesso et al., 2019). Both canopies and propagules of shrubs may release compounds in their neighborhood affecting the quality of regeneration microsites for perennial grass propagule germination in arid rangelands (Bewley et al., 2013; Segesso et al., 2019).…”

“…We selected two long‐lived evergreen shrub species ( Larrea divaricata and Schinus johnstonii ; http://www.floraargentina.edu.ar) with strong xeromorphic traits (Carrera et al., 2009), high phenol content, and different phenolic profiles. Larrea divaricata has a strong prevalence of phenolic compounds of medium complexity and S. johnstonii shows an even representation of phenolic compounds of different structural complexity, including compounds of a complex structure not present in L. divaricata (Saraví Cisneros et al., 2013, 2022). These shrub species persist and/or increase in abundance in heavily grazed areas because they are not preferred by herbivores (Bisigato & Bertiller, 1997) although they might be consumed during periods of very low perennial grass availability (Baldi et al., 2004).…”

“…For example, pigments, alkaloids, polyphenols, and other compounds that may be involved in multiple defensive systems, i.e. UV absorption, tolerance to drought, thermal protection (low-high temperature), defence against herbivores or pathogens or plants, soil microbial activity, soil organic matter decomposition and mineralization, ability of shrubs to capture soil water and to leaf turnover, among others (Oliva et al, 1993;Hartley & Jones, 1998;Souto et al, 2000;Saraví Cisneros et al, 2022).…”
