Similar Outcomes in Diabetes Patients After Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting With Single Internal Thoracic Artery Plus Radial Artery Grafting and Bilateral Internal Thoracic Artery Grafting

Abstract: For diabetic patients, SITA plus RA with or without SV grafting and BITA with or without SV grafting yield similar in-hospital outcomes and long-term survival after coronary artery bypass graft surgery. Therefore, both SITA plus RA and BITA plus SV grafting should be considered for these patients.

“…Hence in this series, eliminating highrisk patients, and not the technique of ITA harvesting, was responsible for the decrease in sternal wound infections. Raza et al studied the incidence of DSWI in patients with SITA plus radial artery (RA) grafting vs. BITA grafting in over 1,300 patients with perioperative glycemic control (45). The incidence of DSWI was 1.4% in both groups.…”

“…1325 patients (SITA + RA 965, BITA 360) were followed for a median follow-up of 7.4 years. In the propensity score-matched cohort, the 14-year survival was 58 vs. 64% ( P = 0.2) for SITA + radial artery and BITA, respectively [ 40 ]. This supports the idea that radial artery is a reasonable alternative to RITA in diabetic patients in regards of survival.…”
