Similar donors—similar blood?

Abstract: RBCs, even from similar donors, vary significantly in levels and changes of both AH and MF, the clinical significance of which must still be ascertained. While further study is needed, donors with severe hypertriglyceridemia may not be appropriate as blood donors due to the unacceptable level of hemolysis observed during storage of our affected study subject.

“…This study demonstrates a strong dependence of the recipients’ ∆SBF on the PRBC deformability per se, thereby providing direct evidence that the deformability of transfused RBC is a potent determinant of skin blood perfusion in transfusion recipients. Notably, this study reveals a large variability in RBC deformability between donors, concordant with previous studies reporting a large in‐donor variability in PRBC properties . Specifically, RBC deformability has been previously shown to differ significantly with donors’ sex, age, and health conditions .…”

“…Previous studies have shown statistically significant differences, and thus inter-donor variability, in RBC mechanical fragility (MF), % hemolysis, and Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) [13]. Our studies expand on this finding by not only correlating bulk mechanical properties, like filterability, with inter-donor variability in the mechanical properties of red cells, but also by providing a mathematically determined quantitative metric for testing red cell mechanical properties.…”

“…Using this method, we measured the inter-donor variability as well as deterioration rate of RBCs’ mechanical properties. There are only attempts to correlate the mechanical and biochemical changes that occur during storage with inter-donor variability [13]. This manuscript reports our findings on the biochemical and mechanical properties of human RBCs with in vitro RBC quality assays.…”

“…In RBCs given by blood donors in two draws, intra-individual as well as inter-individual variation of auto-hemolysis and stress induced hemolysis was seen [26]. Beside age, other factors such as variability in ATP levels differ from person to person [27].…”
