Similar and equal relationships? Negotiating bisexuality in an enduring relationship

Abstract: In the public debate in Finland, same-sex couples' right to legal recognition is routinely defended by stressing their sameness to heterosexual couples within the discourse of romantic love. This article explores how bisexual women and their partners use these discourses. The five couple interviews were analyzed by implementing discourse analysis. The results highlight how, when taking positions within the discourse of the enduring couple relationship, the interviewees drew on the discourse of romantic love. W… Show more

“…A small body of literature, mainly outside the United Kingdom (U.K.), has specifically focused on bisexual relationships (e.g., Bradford, 2012;Feinstein, Latack, Bhatia, Davila & Eaton, 2016;Gustavson, 2009;Lahti, 2015;Li et al, 2013). Bisexual participants are seemingly aware of notions that they must simultaneously be in relationships with men and women and some have challenged this idea (Bradford, 2004a;Gustavson, 2009;Li et al, 2013).…”

“…Other participants suggested that same-sex marriage affirmed their bisexual identity (Lannutti, 2008). However, some bisexual people have resisted adhering to traditional heteronormative marriage (and of enduring relationships more broadly, see Lahti, 2015), and found various ways to 'queer' their relationships (Hartman-Linck, 2014;Lannutti, 2008;Lahti, 2015). 10 Negative cultural portrayals of bisexuality have been reported to affect bisexual people's relationships.…”

“…Spalding and Peplau (1997) found that heterosexual college students in their sample considered bisexual people in relationships less likely to be monogamous, more likely to be unfaithful to their partners, and more likely to carry and give their partners an STI than heterosexual individuals in a relationship. Other researchers have found similar results in which bisexual individuals are considered promiscuous, carry STI's, and incapable of maintaining a monogamous relationship (Brewster & Moradi, 2010;Eliason, 1997;Eliason, 2001;Fahs, 2009;Gustavson, 2009;Herek, 2002;Israel & Mohr, 2004;Lanutti & Denes, 2012;McLean, 2004;Mint, 2004;Mohr & Rochlen, 1999).…”

“…In prior research, bisexual men and women both reported being judged by heterosexuals as being untrustworthy as well as promiscuous (Hequembourg & Brallier, 2009). Bisexuals are often considered to not only be untrustworthy romantic partners (Israel & Mohr, 2004;Mohr & Rochlen, 1999;Spalding & Peplau, 1997) but also untrustworthy friends (Gustavson, 2009;Klesse, 2005;McLean, 2004). They are also considered to not be loyal to their partners (Israel & Mohr, 2004).…”
