Silvicultural research and the evolution of forest practices in the Douglas-fir region.

Abstract: The Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is dedicated to the principle of multiple use management of the Nation's forest resources for sustained yields of wood, water, forage, wildlife, and recreation. Through forestry research, cooperation with the States and private forest owners, and management of the National Forests and national grasslands, it strives-as directed by Congress-to provide increasingly greater service to a growing Nation. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) prohibits dis… Show more

“…Typical plantations involve intensive site preparation activities that focus primarily on planting sites at high stocking levels to achieve tree dominance and canopy closure as soon as possible (Smith et al 1997;Curtis et al 2007). Federal forest plantations share some characteristics of industrial plantations, however there is evidence that federal plantations can have multi-decadal establishment rates (Yang et al 2005).…”

“…Clearcuts are favored over thinning (Ohmann et al 2007), and tree seedlings grown from improved genetic stock are typical in replanting. Intensive management includes interventions such as herbicide use and burning to control early seral vegetation to ensure planted seedlings or saplings establish successfully (Curtis et al 2007). Thus, the early seral stage of this forest type is often avoided and stages which favor establishment of overstory trees occur quickly after stand establishment (Ohmann et al 2007;Swanson et al 2011;Swanson et al 2014).…”

“…Prior to logging, disturbances responsible for the regeneration of Douglas-fir included fire (ignited by lightning or humans), wind, insects, and pathogens (Agee 1991(Agee , 1993Huff 1995;Weisberg 2004). So tightly coupled is the historical relationship between fire and Douglas-fir establishment, for example, that Douglas-fir age structure is often taken as a surrogate for fire history (Morris 1934;Isaac 1940;Munger 1940;Franklin and Dyrness 1973;Hermann and Lavender 1990;Morrison and Swanson 1990;Agee 1991Agee , 1993Huff 1995;Poage 1995;Agee and Krusemark 2001;Franklin et al 2002;Winter et al 2002;Curtis et al 2007).…”
