Silsesquioxane‐Containing Hybrid Nanomaterials: Fascinating Platforms for Advanced Applications

Abstract: Silsesquioxanes (SSQs), with the general formula, (RSiO1.5)n—where R stands for an organic group, such as alkyl, aryl, alkoxy, or H—are a type of molecular‐level organic/inorganic hybrid silica‐based material. These materials contain reactive or nonreactive organic moieties as well as inorganic Si–O–Si frameworks. In the past few years, extensive efforts have been made using SSQs to construct multifunctional nanocomposites with suitable properties for a range of applications. In this review, the recent various… Show more

“…It is due to the presence of the inorganic, rigid core (thermal stability, chemical resistance) and organic moieties attached to it (tunable processability) which is the essence of hybrid materials. Functionalized SQs derivatives may be regarded as their nanosized, smallest fragments and precursors that affect and drive the directions of their potential applications [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. Significant development of catalytic protocols for effective and selective anchoring of respective organic functionality to the SQs core has been observed during the last years.…”

“…Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes with mono and multifunctional groups or with organic groups of different structures are important building blocks for the obtainment of electroluminescent, electrochromic, organic optoelectronic materials, and molecules capable of tunable surface reactions. They are also used as building blocks for hybrid nanocomposites because of their nanometric size [1,2,3,4]. Polyorganosilsesquioxanes (POSSO) can be attributed to hybrid polymeric materials in which macromolecules with an inorganic siloxane backbone are framed by side organic groups R [5].…”

“…In this regard, polyhedralo ligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) have emergeda savaluableg roup of 3D nano-building-blocks for the fabrication of av ariety of hybrid functional materials. [15][16][17][18][19] Several prime qualifications make POSS the appropriate choice for its use as principal core:( i) it exhibits high stability and excellent biocompatibility in ab iological environment, [20] (ii)the inorganic cage providesn ot only protection to the covalently attached dye from stabilityb ut also ac onvenient framework for 3D multivalent display of pendant epitopes, [21] (iii)facile functionalization. [22] The highly symmetrical and topologically ideal cubic-octameric framework (T8), with general formula (RSiO1.5) 8 and ac age size of approximately 0.5-0.7 nm has been reported as suitable precursor.…”
