Silicon surface modification with trialkoxysilyl‐functionalized star‐shaped polymers

Abstract: The synthesis of trimethoxysilane end-capped linear polystyrene (PS) and star-branched PS and subsequent silicon (Si) surface modification with linear and star polymers are described. Trimethoxysilane terminated PS was synthesized using sec-butyl lithium initiated anionic polymerization of styrene and subsequent end-capping of the living anions with p-chloromethylphenyl trimethoxysilane (CMPTMS). 1 H and 29 Si NMR spectroscopy confirmed the successful end-capping of polystyryllithium with the trimethoxysilane … Show more

“…The G p value was in the 0.02–0.5 chain nm −2 range (490 > DP n > 19), that is, quite close to our results (just slightly higher for low molar mass polymer). In another example, Viswanathan et al62 obtained also equivalent G p for the grafting of trimethoxysilane‐terminated polystyrene onto silica particles. Now, regarding the evolution of G p , it is clearly seen that an increase in DP n led to a decrease of G p (Fig.…”

“…Long and coworkers 42 reported a ''graftingto'' approach where they measured the R g of the precursor polymer. Thus, they were able to authoritatively establish in which regime the tethered polymer chains existed.…”

“…In the literature, two different “ grafting to ” approaches were usually used, either in solution61, 62 or in the melt 63–65. The irreversible adsorption in the melt offers potential advantages over grafting in solution, mainly due to the screening of the excluded volume interaction 64.…”
