“…The fossil has been found embedded in well-rounded, well-sorted, and medium-grained fluvial quartz sandstone of which a rim adheres to the stem due to largely silicified pore space (TRÜMPER et al 2019). The specimen was cut with a trimming saw to reveal both transverse and longitudinal sections.…”

“…The stems that are easily recognisable by their characteristic triangular stele not only appeared in densely silicified sandstones or cherts, in which they washed together with fern pinnules or gymnosperm woods and roots (DERNBACH et al 2002, RÖßLER 2006. Sphenophyllum was also found preserved in growth position among adventitious aerial roots of different tree ferns, like Grammatopteris freitasii or Tietea singularis (RÖßLER et al 2019). However, briefly discussed and illustrated by RÖßLER et al (2020) because of its palaeoecological meaning, Sphenophyllum from central-north Brazil remained to be documented in more detail.…”

“…Multiproxy studies of climate evolution in these low-latitude basins have mostly documented humid/arid cycles, punctuated by warmer episodes (e.g. Roscher and Schneider 2006;Pochat and Van Den Driessche 2011;Izart et al 2012;Cecil et al 2014;Michel et al 2015;Garel et al 2017;Mujal et al 2018;Trümper et al 2020;Pfeifer et al 2020Pfeifer et al , 2021Mercuzot et al 2021b).…”

“…Furthermore, it identified research carried out exclusively by US-based researchers in three states: Guanajuato, Jalisco and Sonora [119]. The petrified wood from the Permian Pedra de Fogo Formation in Brazil has also been the subject of these same practices [120][121][122][123] with a number of holotypes irregularly stored at the Chemnitz Museum in Germany.…”
