One of the youngest known occurrences of anatomically preserved Sphenophyllum Brongniart 1828 is reported from the Permian Motuca Formation, Parnaíba Basin, centralnorth Brazil. At least 31 stems, densely interwoven to each other and associated with tiny roots and leaves of this extinct herbaceous sphenopsid, were found in a silica-petrified state. Originally grown upright, they squeezed into in the pith of the arborescent calamite Arthropitys barthelii NEREGATO et al. 2017, which was additionally caved by putative xylophagous herbivores. Although restricted within natural limits, the Sphenophyllum organs show different developmental stages that encompass a majority of juvenile stems and a few ones with initial secondary growth. The stems are of circular to elliptical outline and consist of a central triarch actinostele made of primary vascular tissues and a variable amount of wood. Extraxylary tissues comprise a narrow innermost zone with putative phloem, internal periderm made of rectangular cells arranged in radial files, inner parenchymatous cortex, outer sclerenchymatous cortex, and small-celled layers of bounding tissue. Moreover, Sphenophyllum is exhibited to be a frequent climber on the trunk surface of Psaronius, Tietea and Grammatopteris tree ferns or trapped among their adventitious aerial roots. In addition, Sphenophyllum cauline members were also found dispersed with other plant organs in a particular type of fossil-rich silicified fluvial sandstone or chert reflecting rapid fossilisation of parautochthonous aspects. These fossil assemblages disclose an underestimated facet of seasonally influenced, densely vegetated riparian forests bordering extended distal fluvial discharges in low-latitude Gondwana. Nevertheless, due to their similar development of major anatomical characteristics, the taxonomic delimitation of late Paleozoic sphenophylls based on vegetative axes alone remains challenging and underlines unexpected long-term stability of especially primary cauline anatomy and vascular architecture in general.

Intramountain late Carboniferous–Permian basins of western Europe developed during the latest orogenic stages of the Variscan Mountain Belt in eastern Pangaea, at equatorial palaeolatitudes. Their stratigraphic framework is mainly based on continental subdivisions (e.g. Stephanian and Autunian continental stages), which can be contentious due to biostratigraphic biases, resulting in long-distance diachronous subdivisions. To provide precise inter-basinal and global correlations to the internationally recognized chronostratigraphic marine stages, this study reports new U–Pb geochronology from the Aumance and Decize–La Machine basins, located in the northern French Massif Central. Zircon grains extracted from three volcanic ash-fall layers give weighted mean 206 Pb/ 238 U ages of 299.11 ± 0.35 Ma; 298.73 ± 0.36 Ma and 298.59 ± 0.35 Ma (2σ total propagated uncertainty) by the chemical abrasion–isotope dilution–thermal ionization mass spectrometry (CA-ID-TIMS) method, coinciding with the Carboniferous–Permian transition (Gzhelian and Asselian stages). These ages imply that the northern Massif Central basins developed synchronously in relatively short periods of time (<10 Myr), reflecting substantial sedimentation rates. Finally, the new chronology of infilling of these basins confirms that they were connected during the late Carboniferous and early Permian periods, improving the knowledge on the late-orogenic Variscan geodynamic setting in this area. Digging deeper into colonial palaeontological practices in modern day Mexico and Brazil

Scientific practices stemming from colonialism, whereby middle- and low-income countries supply data for high-income countries and the contributions of local expertise are devalued, are still prevalent today in the field of palaeontology. In response to these unjust practices, countries such as Mexico and Brazil adopted protective laws and regulations during the twentieth century to preserve their palaeontological heritage. However, scientific colonialism is still reflected in many publications describing fossil specimens recovered from these countries. Here, we present examples of ‘palaeontological colonialism’ from publications on Jurassic–Cretaceous fossils from NE Mexico and NE Brazil spanning the last three decades. Common issues that we identified in these publications are the absence of both fieldwork and export permit declarations and the lack of local experts among authorships. In Mexico, access to many fossil specimens is restricted on account of these specimens being housed in private collections, whereas a high number of studies on Brazilian fossils are based on specimens illegally reposited in foreign collections, particularly in Germany and Japan. Finally, we outline and discuss the wider academic and social impacts of these research practices, and propose exhaustive recommendations to scientists, journals, museums, research institutions and government and funding agencies in order to overcome these practices.
